Switched On: Why Connection Shapes the Brain

As human beings, we’re wired to need connection — to feel loved, safe, and understood. When we’re well supported, we usually know how to notice what we need and reach out for help. But sometimes we can’t. Sometimes we don’t even know we need help at all.

This often shows up sideways — as anger at a small thing, as tension with someone close to us, as a reaction that feels bigger than the moment calls for. Usually, we’re responding not just to what’s happening now, but to something in the past — often a need that went unmet in childhood, long before we had words for it.

Babies and young children are entirely dependent on the adults around them. How responsive that environment is shapes how secure a child feels in the world — and research in neuroscience now shows us just how deep that impact goes. Early experience doesn’t only shape behaviour; it can affect how our genes are expressed. In epigenetics, this is called methylation — the process by which gene function can be switched on or off, sometimes even inherited. In other words, the parts of the brain responsible for joy, curiosity, and connection can, over time, be quietly switched off by early experiences of stress or unmet need.

This isn’t just a story about how we behave. It’s about how our whole nervous system learns to cope — and how those patterns can, without our realising it, be passed on to the next generation.

The good news: this can be repaired. Research consistently shows that therapy can help “wake” the parts of the brain that went quiet — not just changing how we feel, but calming the nervous system itself. When we’re able to recognise, name, and be with our own difficult feelings, something in us settles. And when we can hold and understand our younger, more vulnerable self, we can begin to heal.

This is, at its heart, what therapy offers: a safe space to bring feelings and experiences — however old, however buried — into the room, to be met and understood. Not because something is wrong with you, but because all of us carry things that once needed more care than we were able to give them.
